Living in Nijmegen

With almost 180,000 inhabitants Nijmegen is the regional grand dame. In 2005, the city celebrated its 2000th anniversary. Noviomagus, which contains the Celtic ‘magos’ (plain/market), is the oldest city in the Netherlands. Among other things, the world-famous annual four-day walking event and the focus on sustainability (elected as the European Green Capital in 2018) have granted Nijmegen its international grandeur. In this piece we’re not even going to start to recount the very rich history of this city on the river Waal. Oh all right then, in 1230 it became a free imperial city and in 1402 a Hanseatic city. Radboud University has turned it into a university city. And what you might not know is that Nijmegen is the ice hockey city where the ‘Young Orange’ club trains. The city suffered a lot in the Second World War and many of the medieval houses in the lower part of the city (on the river Waal) have disappeared. The atmosphere is pleasant, the surroundings are beautiful and wooded and hiking (even less than 4 days) is more than worth your while. The German hinterland also offers many opportunities for shopping and culture. And with the new activities on the Honig complex and the Nyma site, the city continues its constant development.

On the north side of the Waal, together with the adjacent Lent, a completely new Nijmegen has emerged in recent years with the arrival of many new neighbourhoods.
